Glacier lake outburst flood mitigation project, phase III, Lunana, Bhutan
Abstract
The prediction of geo-hazards and the assessment of single geo-risks in the Tarina valley is based on risk engineering methods as stability calculations of morainic dams and flood wave / dam breach computer simulations. The impact of a future glacial lake outburst on the environment is assessed and recommendations for mitigation measures are given by calculating a worst case scenario of a possible new outburst flood from glacier lakes. For settlements hazardous areas are delineated based on field assessment and modelling results in order to develop local hazard mitigation strategies ant to improve hazard preparedness of local inhabitants.
