GPS for the Austrian Forest Inventory: Analysing and adapting of methods and systems
Abstract
The Austrian Forest Inventory measure and evaluate the status of several thousand trees in Austria based on a systematic sample grid. One of the practical problems more difficult to be solved in a sample forest inventory is the accurate positioning of these grid points, which has been located and marked in a preceding inventory session. The aim of the project is to develop a methodology for determining the accurate position of these points by using the GPS technology. Tests emphasizing on different measuring methods and GPS data processing systems will be carried out to analyze the systems behavior under tree canopy concerning the attainable accuracies.
