Phenotypic and genetic description of the breeding population of the Noriker horse
Abstract
With the project: Phenotypic and genetic description of the breeding population of the Noriker horse, a genetic characterisation of this autochtonious austrian horse breed is attempted. The breeding history of the Noriker horse in Austria is very old, due to a clerical stud founded in the 16th century near Salzburg. From this time there exists an influence of baroque horses in the breed. The phenotypic diversity based on coat coloures and on type of horse in the Noriker breed is obvious. The project is focused on the analysis of inbreeding and genetic diversity by using pedigree data. Following measures of genetic diversity will be calculated: effective number of founders, ancestors and founder genomes. To estimate genetic diversity also 20 microsatellite markers will be included. For the description of the different types of Noriker horses 29 body measurements are defined. About 1000 mares and 150 stallions will be measured all over Austria.
