Late Bronze Age agriculture in Eastern Austria as mirrored by the charred remains of cultivated and wild plants from the settlement Stillfried an der March
Abstract
The project attempted the first comprehensive analysis of agriculture, environment and agricultural resources in a Late Bronze Age settlemet on Austrian territory. Using charred plant remains as primary source of information, farming and farming practices in Late Bronze Age Stillfried were reconstructed. Special attention was given to crop plant spectrum, use of summer and winter crops, patterns of crop rotation, probable location of fields, soil fertility and intensity of cultivation, as well as to methods for harvesting, processing and storing agricultural products. The results gave insight into the annual pattern of agricultural activities and the tight working time-schedule of Late Bronze Age farmers. Palaeoeconomic modelling provided an estimate for the possible numbers of inhabitants of the settlement. Finally, the archaeobotanical evidence provided information on the early human impact on the landscape and the ecosystems in the vicinity of the settlement.
