Abstract
Several autochthonous goat breeds exist in Austria. They are more or less related with regard to their breeding history. Such breeds are: Gemsfärbige Gebirgsziege, Tauernschecke, Steirische Scheckenziege and Pinzgauer Ziege Additionally to the breeds mentioned above, the Bunte Edelziege, Strahlenziege and Pfauenziege, the two latter quite rare in Austria, are included in the study. The breed differentiation based on molecular genetic information (microsatellites) is examined. The correct assignment of individuals to their respective breed using molecular genetic information only will also be checked.
