Archaeobotanical investigations on early medieval agriculture in the surroundings of the Leiser Berge
Abstract
Trough the archaeobotanical analysis of charred plant remains from the storage pits of an early medieval slavonic settlement in Michelstetten (Weinviertel, Lower Austria) the project aims to shed light on the crop plants, the diet, the agricultural practices and the patterns of land use of the slavonic population of eastern Austria during the 7.-9. centuries AD, which so far have been scarcely studied. A comparison with the much better known situation in the Czech and the Slovac republic is planned. The project will possibly help to decide whether the Michelstetten sattlement could have served as a provider of food to a nearby slavonic fortress. It will investigate the type and intensity of agricultural practices for sustaining the productivity and fertility of the fields (manuring, crop rotation, fallows).
