Biodiversity of forest communities with English Yew (Taxus baccata L.)

Abstract
Population viability risk management (PVRM) can be used for development and evaluation of conservation strategies for the maintenance and viability of an endangered species. In order to evaluate conservation strategies with regard to viability of an English yew population (Taxus baccata L.) in several sites in Austria (Bad Bleiberg/Kärtnen, Gschnaid/Styria) it will be necessary to assess forest biodiversity of the forest community and the current English yew population. Based on the results of an environmental state analysis and a characterization of the ecological parameters of the English yew population the viability of the yew population will be described. Within a risk analysis the viability effects of conservation strategies have to be determinated through a qualitative assessment of the probabilities for a decrease of the yew population along with scenarios at different environmental conditions. Genetic diversity is an important environmental parameter for an assessment of the probabilities for a decrease of the yew population also. A study on the genetic variation of the English yew population using Isozyme genmarkers within the process of population viability risk management will be done. In this context it will be able to evaluate different conservation strategies with regard to the biodiversity and viability of English yew populations.
