Biodegradation of Heavy PAHs at Contaminated Sites: Optimisation of an Oxidative-Microbial Remediation Technique
Abstract
Besides an increased chemical stability a lack in bioavailability of high molecular weight PAHs (high log KOW) in soil accounts for very low degradation rates. Therefore, a pre-treatment using oxidising agents was introduced to increase the accessibility to microorganisms by modifying the chemical structure. In order to achieve not only a removal of native PAHs but also a reduction in toxicity, chemical attack as well as bioremediation progress was monitored using bioassays. This project was accomplished together with the ARCS focusing on chemical oxidation and large scale application, whereas the IFA-Tulln dealt with the optimisation of biological processes and toxicity identification of oxidation producs.
