Mapping of vegetation in the Piedras Blancas National Park, Costa Rica
Abstract
The aim of the project is the generation of a land cover map focusing on vegetation for an area in the south-eastern part of Costa Rica called “Regenwald der Österreicher”. For this area that covers approximately 150 km² colour-infrared aerial photos from 2003 are available. The photos are analysed by stereoscopic photo-interpretation. The categories that should be distinguished have been worked out together with the financier. Special attention is paid to the discrimination of primary and secondary forest. Other categories that are distinguished are mangroves, pasture, plantations (e.g. oil palm plantations) etc. Data collected in several field visits have been used both for the training of the interpreter and for assessing the accuracy of the resulting land cover map.
