Genetic Characterisation of Austrian Cattle Breeds
Abstract
Several rare, autochthonous cattle breeds are kept in Austria. Tiroler Grauvieh and Original Pinzgau are acknowledged as endangered, while Murbodner, Kärntner and Waldviertler Blondvieh, Tux-Zillertaler, Pustertaler Sprintzen, Original Braunvieh and Ennstaler Bergschecken are highly endangered because of small census size. The main goal of the project is a genetic characterisation of these breeds based on microsatellite information. Further, pedigree analyses are carried out to get information about loss of genetic diversity within populations. The results of the project allow drawing a nationwide picture on the genetic diversity of Austrian cattle breeds and will provide a reliable source of information for the improvement of future conservation breeding programs.
