Waldviertler Freilandschwein – Part III
Abstract
In the project, Waldviertler Freilandschwein III, the following are to be determined: key data and experience on the free-range husbandry of pigs, in particular concerning choice of location, production procedure, ecology, hygiene, quality assurance and cost effectiveness relevant for use in practice. Prior to this project, the projects, Part I and Part II, studied free-range husbandry in fattening pigs and the ecological aspects of free-range husbandry. The following categories are to be covered of the project at hand: 1. Genetic make-up of the pigs: Reassessment and determination of breeds and crossbreeds prefered for use in free-range husbandry due to past performance. 2. Reproduction (Sow and piglet husbandry): Optimisation of procedures in the farrowing area, procedures in rebreeding of sows after weaning of piglets, and the size, structure and management of the open sow groups. Optimisation of feed rationing for open sows fed ad libitum. 3. Fattening pigs: Optimisation of feed and drinking stations as regards feed loss, demand-oriented water supply and management of feed alternation (phase feeding). Optimisation of organisational and technical procedures in herd management (identification, weighing, selection and transport of animals). Estimation of grazing feed intake by free-range pigs. 4. Animal health: Notation of parasitological developments in free-range enclosures throughout utilisation. 5. Economics: Ascertainment of data regarding the cost effectiveness of free-range husbandry (expenses, costs, proceeds, income). 6. Product quality: Determination of carcass, meat and fat quality in free-range pigs. 7. Use of results: The report of results of the evaluation and data collection including the subsequent discussion thereof are to be added to a documentation of all previously collected key data, experience and information in the project, Waldviertler Freilandschwein. This shall serve as the basis for a recommendation catalogue for animal- and environment-friendly free-range husbandry in pigs.
