Monitoring the effects of conversion to organic farming
Abstract
To examine the development of organic farming a long term field monitoring was established at the biofarm “Rutzendorf” of the “Landwirtschaftlichen Bundesversuchswirtschaften GmbH” in the Marchfeld region east of Vienna. It is an interdisciplinary project of eleven scientific institutes which started in 2003. For this purpose a scientific concept was created and data have been ascertained in the first three project years. In the following project phase, data ascertainment for the monitoring will be continued and data acquisiton will be optimized. In subareas of the project, new supplementing examinations will be integrated. The aims of the project are: examination of changes concerning soil and plant parameters with the conversion to organic farming; investigation of the effects of different organic fertilisation systems on soil properties and on crop performances; analysis of existing biotops (hedges and strips of flowering plants) on the farm and planning and selective realization of new biotops with the aim of enhancing the biodiversity of the area, offering habitats for beneficials and reducing wind erosion potential.
