Abstract
The Thomaseck is situated at the southern entrance to the Anlauf-valley, close to the railway station Boeckstein. The north-facing release area of the Thomaseck avalanche is intensively protected by supporting structures. Despite the intensive technical measures, avalanches are still expected to be triggered from the slope. Observations have shown that intensive precipitation events during the winter months can lead to snow-buried supporting structures. A possible avalanche of the Thomaseck can easily reach the fan and snow masses are than deposited even on the opposite slope of the valley. The affected area is crossed on the one hand by a road, leading to the railway station Boeckstein and the residential buildings and on the other hand by the Tauernbahn from the Austrian Federal Railways. For the estimation of the risk regarding the affected deposit area of the Thomaseck-avalanche a security concept is proposed. In the context of this work the release area of the avalanche is analyzed and the external factors such as precipitation, wind, snow cover distribution and release height are examined. The result of the project is a risk and danger evaluation of the affected section including a monetary evaluation of the damage potential.
