SEDIBAL
- Forschungscluster "Nachhaltigkeit"
Abstract
In the context of ISI Danube the project SEDIBAL (sediment balance for the Danube river in the framework of the IHP Regional Cooperation of the Danube countries) contributes to integrated and sustainable water management, intercalibration of various sediment related data sources and upgrading of existing scientific relations in the Danube basin. The project has a basin wide perspective, has a clear international dimension and contributes to transboundary collaborations. This action is proposed within the framework of UNESCO´s IHP VI and IHP VII (Action II.1.1.1.3. International Sediment Initiative) and will contribute to themes and focal areas defined in IHP VII (1.1, 1.2, 1.4. and 2.4). SEDIBAL is also seen as a substantial input to ICPDR activities to support the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive. The main aim is to provide a sound basis for transboundary water management and environmental protection by establishing a sediment balance for the whole Danube under consideration of the main tributaries including different spatial and temporal scales. Furthermore, it will identify knowledge deficits in sediment management on both the scientific and applied level.
