Ecology and silviculture of fir species from Europe and Asia Minor
Abstract
The European silver fir and the fir species from the Mediterranean Region are among the most important tree species of the European forest ecosystems. They contribute to stand stability as well as to resilience of the ecosystems and show respectable increment of wood. Furthermore fir species provide food and habitat for a wide range of species, which are the reasons for their ecological value. The management of fir species presumes detailed knowledge on the ecological conditions and the differentiation of the ecotypes. This knowledge gap is of special importance for Austria regarding the expected impact of climate change to the European forest ecosystems.
