Seedling ecology in meadows
Abstract
The following questions are to be answered in this project: 1. How many meadow plants germinate during the one full year under different cutting regimes? 2. Whta is the survival rates of the seedlings in meadows during one year with respect to different cutting regimes? The experiments are performed in the Lainzer Tiergarten in Vienna (Austria) The following cutting regimes are tested: mowing once a year at the beginning of July mowing in every second year at the beginning of July not mown since 2000. We expect relevant data to decide upon the options of reducing the cutting frequency under the need to hold the levels of biodiversity. The data are compared to those seedling quantities and survival rates that were studied at the beginning of the project in 1999 when all plots were cut in the same way.
