Poisonous plants in grasslands – recent problems with Senecio and Colchicum, causes and solutions
Abstract
In some parts of Austria poisonous plants have recently increased in extensively managed grasslands. As the toxic components are still present in hay and silage, the farmers cannot utilize their fodder anymore. However, low-productivity meadows and pastures, which are only cut once or twice a year and don’t receive any fertilizers are very valuable from a nature conservation point of view. The overall goals are to analyse the causes of the increase of poisonous plants and to provide recommendations for a proper management. Detailed studies about Senecio spp. and Colchicum autumnale, which cover aspects of vegetation ecology, population ecology, phytochemistry and veterinary medicine, are conducted in three model regions.
