Adaptation to Climate Change in Austria
Abstract
As a supplement to the mitigation of climate change, adaptation is seen as a necessity for coping with the impacts of climate change that cannot be avoided. The assessment of vulnerability and of options for adaptation requires an integration (or coupling) of climate and economic models. We develop a coupled dynamic climate-economic model system for Austria that can be used for evaluating potential adaptation options in two climate sensitive sectors, agriculture and tourism. Building on high-resolution climate change scenarios, the bottom-up sectoral models are embedded in a recursive dynamic general equilibrium framework to incorporate macroeconomic feedback effects. The huge uncertainties involved over the time scales relevant for climate change are addressed by model validation and reliability analysis.
