Abstract
In the context of resource management the aerobic and anaerobic treatment of biogenic waste has gained in importance during the last decade. In the Viennese biogas plant residues from anaerobic digestion are composted with bulk materials. The target of the project is to improve the quality of the compost obtained regarding the humic substance synthesis and the compliance with the limit values of heavy metal contents. The data obtained provide a basis for a future eco-balance. The first part of the project focuses on data evaluation of the biogas plant that have been collected since the start of plant operation in September 2007. A series of biowaste compost data is also available that serve as a reference. Among the large data pool the evaluation of heavy metal contents along the anaerobic process, in the anaerobic residues and in the resulting compost are in the focus of interest. The second part of the project is dedicated to the characterization of the composts produced with residues from anaerobic digestion and biowaste, using different conventional and innovative analytical methods. Laboratory experiments will be conducted to find out the best mixture in terms of humic substance formation. During the 3rd phase of the project the best variant of input mixtures will be tested in a large scale-composting trial in the composting plant in Vienna.
