Abstract
This research project focuses on the long-term emission behaviour of the waste material excavated from the MSW-landfill Allerheiligen. The waste material is tested in column set-ups in the laboratory of the ABF-BOKU. With this set-up the long-term leaching as well as degradation processes of the waste material are assessed, in order to determine the aftercare period for this specific landfill site. Several substances, in particular ammonium, usually remain in the organic as well as mineral waste matrix over a long time. The comparison between of total nitrogen content of the solid waste matter, the extractable amount of mineralised compounds from the solid matter, and the compounds measured in the leachate of the columns (such as NH4-N and NO3-N) indicates the status quo of the mineralization processes as well as suggests interactions between potential emissions and retention in the waste matrix. The column tests are conducted under standardised conditions over a period of 18 months in the laboratory. Periodically, samples from the built in solid waste matter and the leachate are taken and relevant parameters analysed. Leachate amount, gas production and concentrations (CO2, O2, CH4) are monitored continuously. The columns will be irrigated with the amount of water simulating the local precipitation conditions of the landfill site; however, the solid/liquid ratio will be increased in order to accelerate leaching processes. Based on the results derived from these tests, in synopsis with data from former research projects, and assuming defined boundary conditions the long-term development of the waste material and its emissions will be assessed.
