WorldView-2 satellite images for forest applications

Abstract
WorldView-2, launched in October 2009, is a satellite sensor that offers new spatial and spectral features. The high spatial resolution of the images (0.46 m panchromatic, 1.84 m multispectral) combined with 8 spectral bands increases the potential for forest applications. The project focuses on two issues: 1) Tree species identification: Investigations are done to figure out, if individual tree species can be identified by using the specific spectral features of the new sensor. In particular, the additional benefit of the new bands (Coastal, Yellow, Red-Edge, near Infrared-2) added to the conventional ones (Blue, Green, Red, near Infrared-1) is analysed. 2) Early detection of bark beetle attack: It is investigated, if bark beetle attack on trees can be identified at an early stage by using the spectral bands (including spectral indices) of the new sensor. In particular the physiological changes should be recognised before changes in colour of the needles are visible for the human eye. The investigations are based on image data from three acquisition dates (June, July and October 2010) as well as on reference data about extraordinary felling activities due to bark beetle attack throughout the year 2010.
