Abstract
Chemical analysis of tar oil constituents for the risk assessment of tar oil contaminated sites is commonly limited to the analysis of 16 polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) listed by the US-EPA. Tar oil, however, consists of some 400 different compounds. Many of them feature significant toxic potential, and are not determined by standard. Using multidimensional gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (cGCxGC/MS, a large variety of physico-chemically different compounds can be analyzed in one single run. The project aims at the development and validation of a cGCxGC/MS analysis method for tar-oil contaminants in contaminated sites in Austria.
