Doctoral School Sustainable Development II -Community-Based Ecotourism in Laos: Benefits Sharing among Community Members
Abstract
Ecotourism has been regarded as a tool for socio-economic development and promote conservation of cultural and natural resources. The government of many developing countries including Lao focus the attention on ecotourism development with the hope that it will create employment opportunities and increase income for people in the rural areas. These will lead to increase in living standard and bring them out of poverty trap. However, the findings from previous researches indicate that local communities receive only minimal benefits from tourism and the distribution of the benefits is unequal, as these groups of people bear major cost incurred. Therefore, this study will address the problems associated with benefits distribution in the host communities. The overall objective of this project aims to assess the benefits that local communities received from ecotourism development in Laos and further to investigate how these benefits have been shared among community members. The research will be conducted in protected areas in Northern, Central and Southern Laos where ecotourism play an important role in socio-economic development of the communities living in and at the adjacent areas of these national parks.
