ENLIGMA: N-modified LIGnins as a source for functional MAterials
Abstract
N-modified lignins can be obtained economically by ammoxidation of lignocellulosic materials under mild conditions. Because of their resemblance to natural humic substances (total N contents, C / N ratios, content of various N bond forms that mineralize at different rates in the soil and thus have a long-term fertilization effect, cation exchange capacity), they are promising products for the initial planting / reclamation of degraded soils. In the frame of the module ENLIGMA: N-modified LIgnins as a basis for functional MAterials, it will be studied to what extent certain lignin fractions from a modular biorefinery approach can be used for the production of the above-described artificial humic substances. Furthermore it will be checked if mechanically stable hydrogels can be obtained by cross-linking of the obtained N-lignins which would be of great benefit if such soil improving materials would be used for rehabilitation in aride regions. Replacement of phenol by N-lignins in the production of phenol-formaldehyd resins will be another focus of ENLIGMA.
