Evaluation of strategic options for waste management in Zanzibar
Abstract
The present situation of waste management in Zanzibar can be characterized by lacking disposal capacities and an undeveloped recycling sector. A further shortcoming is littering of waste with negative consequences on tourism. Waste disposal practices as lacking landfill capacities and the application of untreated residual waste as fertilizer in agriculture pose the risk of soil contamination and should be replaced by organized collection, treatment and recycling of waste. With this, littering should be reduced as well. The overall objective of the project is to improve the current municipal solid waste management system in Zanzibar. To achieve this, a sustainable municipal solid waste management strategy will be defined and solutions for environmentally sound recycling and disposal will be identified and evaluated. Furthermore the viability of composting is identified and a pilot composting plant will be prepared.
