Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of different nutrient densities in diets of fattening pigs on performance, carcass parameters and feeding behaviour. Therefore, 60 pigs with an average body weight of 34.5 kg (+- 0.36) where divided into three treatments, a diet with high nutrient density feed (HND) (13.45 MJME/kg), a diet with low nutrient density feed (LND) (12.95 MJME/kg) and one group where the animals had the possibility to choose between both diets (FC). Animals were equipped with an individual ear transponder for data collection in the automatic feeding system. The diets were calculated to keep a constant energy : nutrient ratio. The fattening period was split into a starter, grower and finisher phase. The FC group consumed mainly the HND feed (81.0 % in starter; 83.9 % in grower; 81.5 % in finisher phase). Considering the fattening performance, the HND and the FC reached similar performance data. The LND diet declined performance in almost fattening and carcass parameters (p < 0.05). No differences concerning the feeding behaviour between the three feeding groups were detected (p > 0.05). The results of this trial showed that pigs of modern genetics still have the ability to cover their energy/nutrient demand out of different sources by themselves without any negative effect on the performance.
