Abstract:
The topic of vertical gardening and facade greening in urban areas got a lot of attention in the last few years. Now, the aim of this diploma thesis is to analyze and define the components of the corrosion system found in a façade greening system made of aluminum and stainless steel in order to estimate its further development and suggest possible solutions. After an extensive literature search fundamental terms are described and possible risk factors are named. To determine the reasons of the corrosion process the metals, the soil, the water storage mat, and deposits from the metals surface are analyzed. The metal probes are controlled for their alloy composition. The soil and the water storage mat are tested forlevels of chloride, nitrite, sulfate and pH value. The results show that the levels of certain important risk factors are above recommended standards. Particularly the concentration of chloride ions which are known as one of the main causes for pitting corrosion tends to be very high, when the liquid layer on the metals surface is very thin. In summary this study is a first step towards defining the components of the corrosion system and analyzing the involved risk factors, which provides a basis for further research to fully analyze and understand the reasons for corrosion in this façade greening system.
