Abstract:
keywords: coppice with standards, forest inventory, diversity indices, silvicultural inventory. The aim of this thesis was to establish a forest management concept for coppice with standards stands in the woodlands at river March. In cooperation with the forest enterprise “Baumgarten an der March” an area of 118 ha was investigated and divided into 59 research plots. For the field survey a grid system of 141 x 141 m was created. Using complete enumeration in predefined fixed plot circles as sampling method, dead wood, tree species diversity, biometric figures and quality grading as well as reproduction type were investigated. Furthermore the stage of decomposition concerning deadwood, regeneration dynamics, damages caused by game (especially browsing) and habitat characteristics were checked. This paper demonstrates several diversity indices which provide valuable information about tree species abundance in a forest community. Scenarios for a conversion to a sustainable, more adapted coppice with standards system were elaborated. Based on the silvicultural inventory and the data evaluation this paper also points out which areas are adequate for managing coppice with standards stands and gives recommendations for decisions concerning future harvesting activities. Additionally concepts for providing biodiversity recommendations have been considered. The results of this thesis help to inform forest management about the decision making process with regard to the conversion of false high forests into coppice with standards forests.
