Abstract:
A provenance test was initiated for the needs of the district Hartberg-Fürstenfeld in Styria / Austria, which is located in the eastern foot hills of the Alpine mountains forming a transition zone to the basin of Graz. Two experimental sites were selected representing different elevational positions across the district: one at mount “Kulm” at an elevation of 920 – 960 m a. s. l. and a second experimental site in the basin at 360 – 380 m a. s. l. Altogether 10 provenances from Abies alba were selected, where four local Austrian provenances were compared with five provenances from Romania and one provenance from Bulgaria. In addition, one provenance was provided from Abies borisii-regis and one from Abies bornmuelleriana. The planting material, raised from four different nurseries, showed some variety in metric traits but these differences were not statistically significant with one exception: the small-sized Bulgarian material. Mortality rate was evaluated two months after plantation to quantify short-term responses regarding planting before the occurrence of summer drought periods. Low mortality rates with an average of 4,4 % (“Kulm” site) and 3,1 % (“Oberrohr” site) were observed, which were within the frame of expectations. After summer, mortality rates raised to 19,4 % (“Kulm” site) and 7,2 % (“Oberrohr” site). Site “Kulm” seems to exceed ordinary mortality rates due to large pine weevil (Hylobius abietis) attack. Metric traits and quality characteristics were measured for a subsample of 28 plants per plot in September 2016 in order to gain information about performance after first vegetation season.
