Abstract:
The global market for electrical and electronic equipment is growing. These products contain different metals and plastics but potentially heavy metals, plasticizers and flame retardants as well. Especially halogenated flame retardants are potentially persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic and therefore of concern. Contact with contaminated house dust is considered the most important human exposure route. Dermal contact with flame retardant containing consumer products recently came into focus of research. In this study the extraction of brominated flame retardants from computer keyboards under real use conditions was examined. Furthermore the extraction of brominated flame retardants from computer keyboards with simulated sweat and simulated landfill leachate was analyzed. Therefore the bromine concentration of single keys was determined with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy as a proxy for brominated flame retardants. In addition the distribution of the bromine concentration for different keyboards of the same model was examined. Usage of keyboards had no measurable effect on the bromine concentration of the samples. Extraction with simulated sweat showed a decreasing bromine contend within the samples, while extraction with simulated landfill leachates showed no effect. The distribution of the bromine content indicated the fabrication with recycled polymers containing brominated flame retardants within the legal limits.
