Abstract:
Basis for all aspects of efficient sewer operation and maintenance is the profound knowledge of the structural, operational, hydraulic and environmental condition of the sewer system. To ensure durable functional capability of the sewerage, periodical inspections are essential. Today, condition assessment of sewers is inter alia carried out by CCTV-Inspections. Professionally accomplished, this method of sewer inspection delivers good structural and partial operational and hydraulic information about the sewer. Apart from the classical CCTV-Inspection there are other inspection methods and technologies available today. This diploma thesis deals with the structural and operational condition assessment of sewers using a manhole-zoom-camera. The technology of the manhole-zoom-camera is explained in principle, followed by an analysis of products currently available on the market. The main part of this thesis is investigating the application of the manhole-zoom-camera on extensive practical inspections on a length of 6.300 m of sewer pipes. The objective of these inspections was the examination of the applicability of the manhole-zoom-camera to assess structural and operational conditions of sewer systems. Furthermore, a cost-benefit-analysis for the integration of the camera into a proactive sewer cleaning strategy was made. The thesis concludes that due to the limited detection rate of about 50% the manhole-zoom-camera is only partly useable for structural condition assessment and cannot replace the classical CCTV-Inspection. However, the manhole-zoom-camera is suitable for the detection of operational parameters, e. g. deposits in the invert of the pipeline, obstacles in the cross section or water infiltration. Accordingly, the sewer cleaning strategy can be adapted based on the detection of the deposits. Furthermore this type of inspection is simple, quick and cost-efficient. Especially sewer bends and pipe depressions can be identified easier, compared with the classical CCTV-Inspection. Moreover, the manhole-zoom-camera gives a good overview of the sewer.
