Abstract:
This master thesis refers to the regeneration dynamic of beeches (Fagus sylvatica) on former spruce (Picea abies) dominated windthrow areas in the „Waldviertel“. Currently there are hardly any studies on the topic regeneration dynamic of beeches on windthrow areas. Therefore an investigation of 18 hold over beeches and one group of beeches situated in a fenced investigation area of the Fürstenberg’schen Forst- und Güterdirektion took place in autumn 2011. Thereby 906 circular sample plots were distributed to the investigation area in the influence area of 60 meters around the hold over beeches where the established rejuvenation was collected. The research showed that there is a significant correlation between the plant density and the distance from the mother tree. In the vicinity of the hold single beeches and the beech group 4300 to 58900 beech young stands per hectare could be achieved, whereas the density at a distance of 30 meters 150 beech young stands per hectare not exceeded. Furthermore, the crown projection area was examined for the regeneration dynamics. It was apparent that with an increasing projection area of the crown the density of the natural beech regeneration increases. When you make a grouping by distances of the seed trees it could be shown that the density of natural beech regeneration with increasing distance between the hold over beeches strongly decreases. A further objective of the current master thesis was in the comparison of the stem- and crown morphologie of the seed beeches with the natural beech regeneration. It could be shown that the accordance between the hold over beeches and the natural beech regeneration is about 23 percent in crown morphology and about 64 percent in stem morphology. Based on the results of the current master thesis silvicultural implications in terms of the required number of hold over beeches per hectare were formulated. Therefore on the investigation area on average 5-6 seed beeches are enough to get a proportion of 1/3 beeches in the future stand.
