The current research project analyses the impact of pollination on conservation and/or stable and enhanced growth of species-rich vegetation adapted to alpine conditions. The study takes into account a period of three years (2011 – 2013), exploring controlled pollination by the honey bee Apis mellifera carnica. The experimental plots are located in the Steggraben, part of the catchment area of the Kaponig stream in Obervellach within the National Park “Hohe Tauern” in Carinthia/ Austria at a sea level between 1890 m and 2350 m. The plant species that honey bees actually visit in the prevailing conditions in the Alpine region are based on pollen analyses from pollen collected by the bees and on the honey. The proportions of wild bees (e.g. bumble bees) and various other potential pollinators (flies, moths, etc.) are determined by counting of these flying insects. Following the surveys of the site and the contact vegetation, these results are then compared with those of the pollen analysis. The bees also visit plant species on areas of vegetation that are not in the immediate vicinity, but that are valuable to them due to the supply of nectar and pollen. In addition to many other factors, the selection of species of grasses, herbs and legumes in the seeding material and their quantities are decisive elements for a successful revegetation of areas subject to erosion in Alpine regions.
