- Abstract:
- Within the framework of this master thesis it was attempted to estimate the potential impacts on the environment due to the production of one kilo of table grapes which were produced in Eastern Austria, and to find out if environment impacts are influenced by production systems (organic or conventional).
Through Life Cycle Assessment the global warming potential (GWP100), the freshwater eutrophication potential (FEP), the terrestrial toxicity potential (TETPinf) and the human toxicity potential (HTPinf) of one literature-based reference vineyard model with conventional table grape production and three vineyards with organic respectively close-to-organic production were calculated. The vineyards are located in the Austrian provinces of Lower Austria and in Burgenland.
The LCA was calculated using the software openLCA 1.4.1 and was based on primary and secondary data, utilizing the ecoinvent-database. For evaluation of the results the method ReCiPe 2008 was chosen.
The calculated GWP of all four vineyards ranges between 0.3 and 1.05 kg CO2-eq and is mainly ascribed to the use of machinery in the vineyard and the production of plastic trays for packaging the grapes. The FEP results range from 9.03E-5 to 1.80E-4 kg P-eq. Here the production of the metal poles for upholding the vine wiring had a big influence. The TETP ranges from 9.37E-5 kg 1.4 DCB-eq to 1.76E-3 kg 1.4 DCB-eq and is mainly caused by the application of copper for plant protection. Mainly responsible for the HTP, which was estimated with 0.13 bis 0.28 kg 1.4 DCB-eq, is the production of the metal poles and the production of agricultural machinery.
Regarding the management system, in the conventional model the production of fertilizer showed substantial contributions to the FEP. In the organic table grape production particularly the more frequent use of agricultural machinery in the vineyard leads to a higher GWP.
