Abstract:
Until now little research has been conducted about the wild-growing flora of Botanical Gardens. Yet those gardens are promising areas referring to the existence of rare species and floral species diversity. Current reconstruction work at the campus of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna causes the loss of several open areas in the University’s Botanical Garden which are habitat of spontaneous plant species. Against this backdrop an inventory and a phytosociological analysis of the wild-growing flora and vegetation of the Garden were performed. The results show that the Botanical Garden has special characteristics as compared to its urban surroundings. The number of species recorded between April and June 2013 comprises almost one tenth of Vienna’s wild-growing flora as a whole. Furthermore several of the recorded species are considered as rare, endangered and/or protected in Vienna. These findings can be explained by the geographical situation of the Garden in a species-rich city on one hand and by the cultivation of special species for the purpose of research and conservation on the other hand. The recorded species were analyzed with regard to the characteristics of certain species traits. A large part of the analyzed species show typical characteristics of wild-growing plants in frequently disturbed urban habitats. Some unusual characteristics were detected in other species traits. Typical phenomena are the domination of generative reproduction as well as the production of high numbers of light-weighted seeds, which are spread by the wind. The occurrence of some species that so far have not been known to exist in this part of the city is remarkable and there is an unusually high number of species pollinated by insects. The inventory of the spontaneous vegetation resulted in the identification and description of ten different vegetation types which characteristically represent the current spontaneous Flora of the Botanical Garden.
