- Abstract:
- Intercropping is of increasing interest in sustainable arable farming systems of temperate regions. A two-year field study was carried out in eastern Austria with wheat and triticale to assess the influence of sowing date (autumn versus spring) and nitrogen fertilization (0 versus 10 g N m-2) on yield, yield components and N yields of intercrops of wheat and triticale. The intercrops were sown in substitutive mixtures with each crop at 50% of its pure sowing density. The autumn-sown crop stands had a developmental advance due to the earlier sowing compared to the spring-sown crop stands, which they could use for higher biomass yields, grain yields, grain N yields, better harvest indices and a higher thousand grain weight (TKW). Intercropping of wheat and triticale resulted with spring-sowing in higher grain yields compared to the pure stands whereas with autumn-sowing no yield advantages were observed. Triciale had in the autumn-sown intercrops a higher share on the grain yield whereas wheat had a higher share in the spring-sown intercrops. The yield components (ear density, grains per ear, TKW) of wheat and triticale differed partly between the pure crop stands and the intercrops. The intercrops had a higher grain N yield with spring-sowing and a higher grain N and residue N yield with both sowing dates compared to the pure stands of both crops.
