In this research the interactions between tomato and herbs in an intercropping system were analyzed. The undetermined, round salad tomato ‘Moneymaker’ and the determined plum tomato ‘Roma’ were planted. As intercropping partners the herbs basil ‘Royal’ and ‘Hohes Grünes Superbo’, as well as Oregano, were planted. Significant differences between the control and variants with herbs were found. In ‘Moneymaker’ all variants with herbs were less attacked by pests than the control. In addition, fruit firmness of ‘Moneymaker’ intercropped with basil was softer than that of the control. ‘Roma’ did not show these differences. The differences in fruit firmness could result from higher soil moisture content due to the soil-covering herbs. The differences in attacks by pests could result from the different growth types. In summary, this study showed that different growth types may result in different reactions in intercropping systems. ‘Moneymaker’ showed best results when intercropped with basil ‘Hohes Grünes Superbo’, conversely, ‘Roma’ did not show any differences when intercropped with herbs compared to the control. The studied ingredients of tomato fruits were not significantly affected by intercrops. However, compared to literature some ingredients of the chosen herbs were affected by intercropping. This could have resulted from shading by the tomato plants.
