Management of permanent grassland sites, through mowing or grazing, has an impact on the compaction status of permanent grassland soils. The aim of this thesis is to obtain knowledge about the compaction state of different grassland soils. For this purpose, soil physical data of soil texture, bulk density and penetration resistance of 20 different grassland sites in the Styrian Murtal were collected. Soil chemical investigations of organic carbon content, total nitrogen content and pH-value were investigated. Also, the occurrence and the coverage of indicator plants for soil compaction were determined. The results showed that all investigation sites show lower bulk densities and penetration resistances in the topsoil than in deeper soil layers. In general, a high organic carbon content could lead to significantly lower bulk density and penetration resistance values. The highest soil compaction was found in horse pastures. Especially in a depth of 0-15 cm significantly higher soil compactions could be found than in all other forms of use. Additionally, intensively used pastures, mowing pastures and horse pastures, could show the highest coverage of indicator plants for soil compaction.
