Abstract:
The present work adresses the evaluation of crosses of preselected varieties and breeding lines of soybean from the years 1999-2001. The trials were carried out at the experimental station of agriculture in Großenzersdorf, Austria. Subject of the study were interesting features for breeding like maturity, yield, plant height, thousand seed weight, protein content, oil content and both protein and oil content. Maturity showed a wide range of values caused by weather influence and a large variety between the cross groups was found. The minimum temperature required for pod set could only be found in the year 2000. Therefore, mainly suboptimal conditions were present throughout the trial and the cross groups showed a large variety for this feature. The plant height was mainly influenced by environmental impacts and the cross groups differed not significantly. The thousand seed weight varied also mainly due to environmental inpacts and the cross groups differed most clearly concerning this feature. The range of protein content was 39.8% to 40.7% and the cross groups showed a large variety for this feature. The weather had a bad influence on the protein content in the year 1999. The cross between Maple Belle and Pando had an average protein content of 45.5%. Therefore, Maple Belle seems to be an excellent mating type. The environmental impact was much lower for oil content than for protein content. The protein and oil content was influenced evidently by environmental impacts and the cross groups differed clearly for this feature.
