Abstract:
The Guarda-mor is a river in the federal state Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil, which has severe riverbank-erosion. Using biotechnical measures, it is possible to reduce (or process) this damage. Biotechnical applications to protect riverbanks have been successfully used in Europe and the United States. . If properly implemented, they can prove extremely beneficial to ecology. They are long lasting and primarily produced from natural resources. In order to implement this treatment in Brazil, it is necessary to have suitable, resistant coppices. By removing vegetation on riverbanks at the Guarda-mor river and the ascertainment of the composition of the natural vegetation in the area of inquiry the species Phyllanthus sellowianus, Sebastiana schottiana, Salix humboldtiana, Calliandra selloi und Calliandra tweediei were chosen and these species were tested for stem cutting-increase and shooting performance. An experimental slope was built up with the results to analyse the growth of adventious roots and the shooting performance during the cold period from April until September 2003 in Brazil. Among the four studied species Phyllanthus sellowianus, Salix humboldtiana and Sebastiana schottiana proved to be very suitable, Calliandra selloi and Calliandra tweediei to be suitable for use as bioengineering material. In July 2003, we planed and built a brushmattress on Guarda-mor river using species that had been tested for suitability by us, as well as additional species.
