- Abstract:
- The Austrian service for torrent and avalanche control is using avalanche simulation programs as a helpful support in the hazard-mapping process. Regarding the Forestry law 1975, the applied methods have to correspond to the actual State-of-the-art. For a further development and calibration of avalanche simulation models a number of good documented and backcalculated avalanches, so called reference avalanches, are necessary. In present times the engineers from the simulation office of the Forest technical service for torrent and avalanche control can work with a pool of 34 reference avalanches. To increase the dataset of reference avalanches, 9 good documented avalanches (7 in Austria and 2 in Italy) are analysed in this diploma thesis. After defining the input parameters (release area, snow height in the starting area, runout zones, snowheight in runout zone, …) simulations with the 2-dimensional simulation model ELBA+ are calculated. A comparison of the results with the mapped events and the chronicle data shows the quality rating of the reference avalanche.
