The pumpkin breeding concentrates on changing from open-pollinated population varieties to hybrid varieties. The breeding on resistance against the zucchini yellow mosaik virus (ZYMV) and against fruit rot are important goals of breeding, too. The importance of the resistance against the new diseases requires a change to new varieties which are mostly hybrids. The aim of this master theses is to find differences in the components of yield, through evalution of a small plot experiment, and experiments considering yield, which were conducted in plots of 0,5 ha size. The first part of the paper deals with the composition of yield in different varieties. The female flowers were marked and the development to fruits has been monitored. The progess of female flowering was different in the varieties investigated. Beside flowering, the weight of the pumpkin fruits and some characteristics of seeds were evaluated. The time of female flowering has an influence on the fruit weight of the pumpkin and on the 100-seed-weight. There are significant differences between the varieties considering the weight of the fruits and the amount of seeds per fruit. The hybrids Gleisdorfer Opal and Maximal have lower weight of fruit and a higher amount of seeds per fruit than the open-pollinated variety Retzer Gold. The high yield of Gleisdorfer Opal originates from the high number of pumpkins compared with other varieties. The characteristics of the single cross hybrid Gleisdorfer Maximal are more homogenous than in the three-way cross Opal. The second part of this paper concentrates on yield performance of different oil-pumpkin varieties. The data came from on-farm experiments across several years and locations in Lower Austria. The experiments were arranged in a standard design. The data were evaluated with different variance analysis models. It was possible to identify significant differences between varieties and environments. LS-means for varieties were calculated based on GLM and mixed model analysis. The ranking of the pumpkin varieties remained the same for all calculation models. Most of the hybrid varieties were superior in yield performance as compared to open-pollinated varieties.
