- Abstract:
- Two field trials were carried out under standard conditions to research the effectiveness of two plant protection products in controlling the larvae of the western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte), i.e. the biological product “Dianem” containing entomopatho¬genic nematodes of the genus Heterorhabditis bacteriophora and the chemical insecticide “Belem 0,8 MG” containing cypermethrine. Three plots measuring approx. 50m² were established on each of three testing sites in south-east Styria. Hatch cages were used for a regular count of the adult western corn beetles emerging from the soil between the beginning of July and the end of August. The trials carried out to determine the differences were based on ratings of the corn roots according to the Traditional IOWA-Scale and the Node-Injury Scale and assessment of silks and cobs after the damage caused by the larvae and beetles. On all sites, significant differences between nematodes and cypermethrine compared to the untreated control were found only with regard to silk clipping. The individual sites varied considerably, however, with regard to all damage assessments performed. A wet sieving extraction apparatus was used to assess the number of Diabrotica eggs from soil samples. To determine the extraction performance (recovery rate), twelve pre-trials were carried out in which soil samples free from Diabrotica eggs were spiked with ten Diabrotica eggs each. Extractions were made with soil samples taken from the trial sites in Wundschuh and Seibersdorf in the spring. On average, 0.93 (±0.32) Diabrotica eggs per litre of soil volume were found. No statistically significant differences were observed concerning the number of diabrotica eggs counted.
