In times where biodiversity is fading and population density in urban areas is increasing, educational centers which try to enhance ecological education and the connectedness to nature are becoming more important. In this master thesis the Polardom at Schönbrunn Zoo is examined and evaluated representing the type of educational center in question. The following questions will be answered: - How do people assess the Polardom in general? - Does the connectedness to nature and the natural awareness of the visitors correlate? - Can the influence of the Polardom on both peoples‘ connectedness to nature and their willingness to donate be measured? - Which suggestions for improvement can be offered to the Polardom or other centers of its kind based on the results of the evaluation? To answer these questions from different points of view the following methods will be applied: a survey amongst visitors of the zoo, a literature based assessment and an expert interview with the head of the educational department of Schönbrunn Zoo. The aim of this evaluation was to show the visitors‘ opinions concerning the didactic methods as well as the actual content the Polardom was educating in. For this 140 people aged 15 to 73 were questioned before and after their visit to the Polardom. The results of the survey showed a high satisfaction rate amongst the visitors. A positive correlation between peoples‘ environmental awareness and their connectedness to nature was verified. An influence of the Polardom on the connectedness to nature and the willingness to donate could not be found. The literature based assessment also proved a positive outcome although some minor weaknesses were found concerning the depth of the provided information. The following improvements have been suggested to the zoo: - Add more detailed content to the interactive games - Display objects for better kinaesthetic learning - Add more detailed information about the different topics
