Abstract:

As a result of the changing legal framework and the prioritization of recycling, the current systems of waste collection are up for discussion. Additional factors, such as climate change, resource efficiency and sustainability also contribute to the investigation and testing of alternative systems of waste collection in pilot projects. Some of them already have been put into practice and replaced the existing separate collection of waste. This thesis will investigate pilot projects and system approaches on alternative waste collection systems, such as a recycling bin, in Austria and Germany. Furthermore the recycling rates of those projects will be compared and based on that the overall potential of recycling should be determined. For this purpose, selected examples for the implementation of a recycling bin in Austria and Germany have been analysed based on their collection quantities and collection rates. Furthermore other influencing factors such as sorting technologies and recycling have been considered. Based on these findings and the results of the model comparison the selected regions have been matched against regions without recycling bin. In addition to this comparison, expert interviews have been conducted to gain an insight into the practical experience of project members. The conclusion of this thesis is that for the selected regions the collection quantities compared before and after the implementation of a recycling bin could be increased by 3.9-7.2 kg per capita and year. The selected projects with recycling bin showed higher collection and recycling rates compared to regions without recycling bin.
