Greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are also formed in agricultural production in considerable amounts. On a trial field in the Upper Austrian humid area (municipality Pötting) measurements of greenhouse gas emissions were carried out. We examined more closely the emissions before and during growth of maize over a period from autumn 2012 to summer 2013, with maize following previously grown catch crops. Part of the experimental field was plowed in autumn incorporating cover crops in order to analyse differences in emissions compared to the unplowed field. The “Closed Chamber Method” was used for the measurement of gas emissions. Additional parameters measured were as Nmin, soil temperature, soil moisture and the content of DOC. The emissions during the winter months showed, as expected, low emissions. However the emission values of the months May and June 2013 showed high peaks of gaseous losses. Nitrous oxide emissions were up to 2500 µg N2O/m2/h and carbon dioxide emissions up to 56 mg CO2/m2/h. The highest emissions were recorded especially after tillage and fertilizer applications or after heavy rainfall events. A weed control with a cultivator in maize showed an increase in CO2 emissions. At the two tillage variants - mulch seeding vs. plowing in autumn- , it turned out that the variant mulch drilling had slightly higher emissions of nitrous oxide (+15,6 % ) and carbon dioxide. A positive effect of plant and mulch cover on the nitrous oxide formation has already been confirmed scientifically and was also found in this experiment. Influences on the emissions of two catch crops, mustard and the catch crops mixture “Wassergüte früh”, could not be confirmed statistically.
