Abstract:
In Nepal, retaining structures are necessary on the hill side and on the valley side of the road because of the typically very steep slopes. The topographical and morphological conditions, the annual monsoon rain as well as seismic activities may cause landslides and mudflows along the roads, which often give rise to damage to the retaining structures. As a consequence it is necessary to carry out maintenance and repair measures. However, the scarce financial resources in Nepal make construction and maintenance activities in the infrastructure sector difficult. The aim of this work was the development of a rating system to evaluate Gabion Walls and Cement Masonry Walls in road construction based on some criteria by considering the stability of the retaining structures. Six retaining structures along the Prithivi Highway are selected for our investigation. These retaining walls were surveyed and recorded using a geotechnical questionnaire. Furthermore, soil samples and photographic evidence were taken. The soil samples were analysed and plans of the structures were drawn. A rating system was developed based on this information. The retaining structures were rated on a scale between 1 and 6 based on some criteria with a rating matrix. These criteria were classified in the categories "Structure", "Structure Surrounding" and "Design and Construction". With this rating system the performance of the retaining structures can be quantified in each category and phase of the life cycle. This helps to determine where construction and maintenance measures are necessary. The overall result shows the condition of the retaining structures and the slopes behind them. The gabion walls and the cement masonry walls are suitable retaining structures considering the limited financial resources in Nepal. Our evaluation results show more frequent and more extensive maintenance is necessary. This could extend the service life of the retaining structures.
