- Abstract:
- In 2011 a cubicle housing system was built at the Agricultural Research and Edu-cation Centre (AREC) Raumberg-Gumpenstein. The loose housing was developed with a feeding alley inside and outside cubicles. The walking allies were furnished with rubber mats of type KURA P (Kraiburg Ltd.). Especially the quick surface drying of dung layers having badly been shifted away caused an increase of dangerous slipping. Hence, in 2015 a part of the outside alley area was equipped with new mats of type profiKURA P. These mats have an “opti-grip-surface” with incorporated corundum and radial profile. In order to be able to compare the two types of mats, in summer 2015 measurements in terms of skid resistance, step length and skid-length were carried out for both mat types and were statistically evaluated by the program Statgraphics Centurion XVII.
For KURA P a skid resistance value µ of 0.42 was found and a value of 0.48 was measured for the other type of mat, profiKURA P. These values clearly differ from each other.
Clear differences were found in the measurements of step length, as well. On KURA P the average step length lay at 1.35 m and for the mat type profiKURA P a step length value of 1.52 m was measured.
A method for measuring the skid-length has not been yet described in literature and has therefore been newly developed, now. Significant differences between the two types of mats could be found, as well. From around 4,900 steps having been counted on both types of mats on all 10 measuring dates and over all 20 measuring fields (1 m²), 89 skid lengths were measured. 80 of these were taken for the evaluation. On KURA P 54 slides with an average length of 40.2 cm were measured. On profiKURA P an average skid length of 32.8 cm was measured at 26 slides.
Thus, obvious differences in terms of skid resistance in favour of mat type prof-iKURA P could be shown via all measuring methods. The official measurement of skid resistance acknowledged by DLG showed a sufficient skid resistance at both mat types. This result, however, doesn´t coincide with the observations on farms. Hence, in future we will need more animal-based parameters for a more accurate assessment.
