Abstract:
Consequences of climate change in the Arctic include a shift of precipitation towards more rain and an increased nutrient availability due to higher soil temperatures. As arctic soils are generally considered nutrient poor, an increased availability might affect plants and ecosystems in general. This study aimed to investigate how the carbon atmosphere - ecosystem exchange was impacted by a shift in precipitation and increased nutrient availability. During the summer 2018 on Disko Island (NW Greenland), a low arctic heath was treated with addition of phosphorus and water in a full factorial design. During the whole growing season, CH 4 emission, ecosystem respiration and net ecosystem exchange were measured using a closed loop chamber system connected to a Picarro gas analyser. After one season it was found that the phosphorus treatment increased both CH 4 and C turnover. Due to a very rainy season the effects of the water treatment were not clear. This experiment is meant to be continued, as one year of treatment is not enough for the long term effects to be seen.
