- Abstract:
- In this diploma thesis comparative studies for the determination of the shear strength of various soils using different test setups are performed.
The shear strength is defined by Mohr - Coulomb failure criterion.
On the basis of this criterion the results of the experimental investigations of the shear strength are interpreted and plotted.
Three kinds of soil are investigated:sand, loess and clay.
In each case the shear tests are conducted using the Bromhead ring shear apparatus, the KREY/CASAGRANDE direct shear apparatus, the Clockhouse Engineering Ltd. direct shear apparatus, the Wiener Routine shear test and the shear test from the institute of geotechnical engineering at the university of natural resources and applied life sciences, vienna.
These tests yield the effective shear parameters phi¿, c¿ and phi(r)¿, c(r)¿.
In order to compare the results of the various shear tests, the soil specimens are produced with approximately equal density and water contents.
The aim of this investigation is to compare and to interpret the determined shear parameteres.
More over personal comments on the european prestandard CEN ISO/TS 17892-10 are added based on the accomplished experiments and a literature inqiry.
In addition, the issue "parallel/conventional controlled direct shear apparatuses" is discussed in this diploma thesis.
